WHY NITRO, ANYWAYS?
As we know, the finish is an extremely important element of the guitar puzzle – that’s why over the years we’ve tested various types of finishes – and based on more than a decade of experience, we’ve developed our unique formula, based on Fender solutions from the late 60s and early 70s – with the difference that our finish is even thinner.
We use a thin but hard sealer whose job is to fill the pores of the wood and smooth the surface (in addition, a thin layer of hard primer brings out the entire range of the guitar with a lot of highs). On top of that, we apply a thin layer of nitrocellulose, which, of course, provides the color – and at the same time smooths out the harshness of the high end.
Today, most manufacturers finish guitars with polyurethane and polyester. These finishes are highly resistant to mechanical damage, as well as scratches, chemicals, and UV rays, making them a definitely better option than nitrocellulose in this regard, although they look inorganic and plasticky. Besides the visual aspect, a significant drawback of modern finishes is their thickness, which can add more mass to the guitar than it might seem. Nowadays, the thickness of the finish sometimes exceeds 1mm, and you also have to add a much thicker layer of modern primer!
So why do we use nitrocellulose lacquer – a technology so old it can be called antique, and one that requires much more work and time? Well, nitrocellulose has completely different aesthetic qualities – it doesn’t flow into a “glass” finish but looks more organic. Since it is a single-component lacquer (curing by evaporating the solvent, without other additives), it has significantly lower resistance to chemicals and damage. These apparent disadvantages are extremely beneficial to us – because we care about a vintage look and authentic aging, as well as – or rather above all – the sound! But…
CUSTOM RELIC SERVICES
An aged guitar is an instrument that has been deliberately prepared to look as if it has been used for a long and intense period. This process aims to replicate the natural aging of a guitar through features such as wear and tear in the finish or patina and rust on the hardware.
Here are some compelling reasons to consider a relic guitar:
Seamless Integration with Existing Instruments
Protect Your Vintage Guitars
Unique, One-of-a-Kind Finishes
If you already own vintage guitars, a relic guitar allows you to maintain a consistent aesthetic across your collection.
The aged look of a relic guitar blends seamlessly with your older instruments, creating a cohesive visual appeal whether you’re on stage or in your studio.
Vintage guitars are valuable, both sentimentally and financially. By using a relic guitar, you can keep your genuine vintage instruments safe from the rigors of regular use. A relic guitar provides the same visual appeal and familiar feel, allowing you to perform and practice without risking damage to your irreplaceable vintage pieces.
: Each relic guitar is uniquely crafted, ensuring that no two are exactly alike. The process of aging and distressing is done by hand, resulting in distinctive patterns of wear that make your guitar truly one of a kind. This uniqueness not only adds character to your instrument but also makes it a personal and individual piece of your musical arsenal.
By opting for a relic guitar, you get the best of both worlds: the reliable playability of a modern instrument and the timeless, storied appearance of a vintage one. This combination allows you to enjoy the aesthetic and feel of a well-worn guitar without the concerns associated with using and preserving a true vintage piece.
