Korpus wykonany jest z agathis (tył i boki) z rzeźbionym klonowym topem. Yamaha wybrała agathis z bardzo konkretnych powodów: jest zauważalnie lżejszy od klasycznego mahoniu – typowa gitara waży 3,6–4,2 kg, dzięki czemu świetnie leży na pasie i nie męczy nawet przy wielogodzinnym graniu.
Tonowo agathis daje ciepłe, pełne brzmienie z wyraźnym, kontrolowanym basem i ładnie zaznaczonymi średnicami. Ma naturalną dynamikę i dobry sustain, a w połączeniu z klonowym topem efekt jest wyjątkowo zrównoważony i responsywny – klon dodaje jasności i definicji na górze, a agathis spaja wszystko w spójnym, muzykalnym środku.
Gryf wykonany z klonu, podstrunnica z palisandra z trapezowymi inkrustacjami i kremowym bindingiem.
Na główce solidne klucze vintage z pokrętłami w kolorze kości słoniowej oraz kościane siodełko.

Equipped with really fat, thick humbuckers in the DiMarzio vein, each with full coil-splitting via push-push switches in the tone pots. In one move you get creamy, rich humbucker tones and bright, delicate, open single-coil sounds – extremely versatile.
The guitar comes in a rather rare and eye-catching color: a beautiful 3-tone sunburst. Most examples of this model were finished in cherry, tobacco or black, so this one immediately stands out.
Body is made of agathis (back and sides) with a carved maple top. Yamaha chose agathis for very good reasons: it is noticeably lighter than classic mahogany. A typical SL-550S weighs 3.6–4.2 kg, so it sits comfortably on the strap and never feels tiring even during long playing sessions.
Tonally, agathis delivers a warm, full-bodied sound with clear, controlled bass and nicely pronounced mids. It has natural dynamics and excellent sustain. Paired with the maple top, the result is exceptionally balanced and responsive – the maple adds sparkle and definition to the highs, while the agathis keeps everything musical and cohesive in the midrange.
Neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard featuring trapezoid inlays and cream binding.
Headstock carries solid vintage-style tuners with ivory-colored knobs and a bone nut.
Electronics are fully passive: 2 × volume, 2 × tone, 3-way toggle switch, plus push-push coil-split on the tone controls.
The guitar has a perfectly leveled fingerboard and brand-new frets – ready for the next several decades of playing.
